Zaptec introduces home solar charging in selected European markets

Zaptec now supports EV charging with home solar production in selected European markets. The new functionality is designed for residential customers who already use Zaptec Sense for dynamic load and power management, and who want to prioritise their own solar production when charging their electric vehicle.

With this launch, Zaptec delivers on a long‑standing promise: native solar‑optimised charging as part of our broader energy management vision. Home solar charging is a key step in helping households use their own energy smarter, not just charge their car faster. Like the rest of the Zaptec ecosystem, the new functionality is built to be future‑proof, with software that will continue to evolve over time.

The feature is currently available in the following countries:

  • The Netherlands
  • Belgium
  • Germany
  • Switzerland
  • Luxembourg

We are rolling this out in phases, starting with selected residential TN‑grid installations using Zaptec Sense.

Today, the feature is only available for residential “Home” installations on TN‑type grids; other grid types, such as IT, are not supported in this release.

If you operate outside these markets, nothing changes in your current Zaptec offering for now.

What the feature does

The new solar charging mode lets users decide how EV charging interacts with home solar production. Within the Zaptec app, eligible users can select between two modes under Power Management:

  • “Surplus + grid”
  • “Surplus only”

When “Surplus only” is selected, Zaptec will limit charging to the surplus production detected by Zaptec Sense in the home installation, within the technical constraints of the charger, the installation and the vehicle.

The feature becomes available once Zaptec Sense has detected local production in the home. It requires an update to both Zaptec Sense and the Zaptec app.

Who can use it

Installation type

This release is available for Home installations only. In Zaptec’s terminology, a “Home” installation is a smaller residential setup with up to three chargers and typically a 32A circuit breaker limit. Larger Zaptec Pro installations are not included in this initial release.

Charger type

  • Zaptec Go
  • Zaptec Go 2
  • Zaptec Pro

Grid type

The feature currently supports residential installations configured as TN‑type grids. Other grid configurations, such as TT or IT grids, are not supported in this release. Your installer will confirm whether your home installation is compatible and configure the system accordingly.

We are working on adding support for additional grid types, including IT grids, through a future firmware update. However, we do not yet have a confirmed timeline to share.

Zaptec Sense type

  • Zaptec Sense Generic
  • Zaptec Sense P1

Software versions

  • Zaptec Sense will be updated once you request the feature in the Zaptec app.
  • Updated Zaptec app with support for the new power management options

How it is enabled

For new installations

  • Install and configure Zaptec Sense in a residential TN grid installation, using Zaptec Sense Generic or Zaptec Sense P1.
  • Ensure that the site has solar production connected and that this production can be measured by Zaptec Sense.
  • Open the Zaptec app, go to Automatic charging, hit 'Get started' and we will prepare an update for Zaptec Sense.

For existing installations

If you already have Zaptec Sense installed in a compatible residential TN installation and your solar production is measured by Zaptec Sense:

  • In the Zaptec app, go to Automatic charging.
  • Tap “Get started” and Zaptec will prepare your firmware update.
  • You'll see a comfirmation message that we've received your request and are reviewing your setup.

When your Zaptec Sense has been updated, the new charging feature will appear in the app.

You do not need any changes to your existing hardware installation, as long as Zaptec Sense is already measuring your home’s solar production.
