Charging a national electric fleet: infrastructure designed to scale

With one of the largest vehicle fleets in France, a major national postal and logistics operator is pursuing an ambitious goal: to electrify its entire fleet by 2030. To support this transition, the group plans to deploy around 2,500 EV charge points each year across its network.

At its mail sorting and distribution site in Holtzheim, Alsace, 132 Zaptec Pro chargers were installed by EDF Business Services to support the daily charging of electric vehicles. The project illustrates an approach designed for scale: fast installation, intelligent power management and centralised equipment supervision.

The challenge:

Ensuring daily charging for a fleet undergoing electrification

Electrifying a fleet is about more than installing chargers. For a large fleet operator working across a national network, the challenge is twofold: ensuring that vehicles are ready each morning for their routes, while deploying a solution that is simple to operate across many sites.

The charging infrastructure must therefore be quick to install, easy to manage day to day and able to evolve with the needs of the fleet.

The solution:

A standardised charging system built for professionals

To address these challenges, EDF Business Services deployed Zaptec Pro, a solution designed for professional installations and multi-site environments.

Designed for professional installations, the solution simplifies every stage of deployment. Its backplate system allows cabling to be prepared in advance, before the chargers are fitted, helping reduce on-site intervention time.

From commissioning, dynamic load balancing automatically distributes the available power between charging vehicles. Operators can therefore optimise existing electrical capacity, even when several vehicles are charging at the same time.

The cloud-based Zaptec Portal completes the system by centralising supervision, settings, remote diagnostics and software updates.

The result: a solution that is simple to deploy, intuitive to manage and designed to support the evolution of a national electric fleet.

In-depth:

A method designed for multi-site deployments

At an operational site like Holtzheim, the challenge is not only to install a large number of chargers. It is also to establish a clear, replicable method that is easy for field teams to operate.

This approach provides greater visibility for future deployments: the same installation principles, the same supervision tools and the same power management logic.

EDF Business Services

EDF Business Services is the business-to-business division of EDF, one of Europe's largest energy companies. It supports organisations with energy solutions, including the design, installation and maintenance of EV charging infrastructure.

Installation designed to save time

Deploying hundreds of charge points on a single site is a complex project. Zaptec Pro has been designed to simplify the work of installers and make large-scale projects easier to deploy.

Thanks to the backplate system, cabling can be completed before the charger is fitted. This organisation makes site preparation easier, reduces the number of steps required on site and accelerates charger installation.

But installing the chargers is only one part of the equation. It is also important to ensure that the available electrical capacity can meet the fleet’s needs as it grows.

On a project of this scale, having a repeatable installation method matters. The backplate allows the electrical work to be prepared in advance, then the charge point can be fitted quickly as the project progresses.

Intelligent charging from day one

Zaptec Pro automatically distributes the available power between the different charge points and phases. Fleet and parking operators can therefore optimise existing electrical capacity while limiting the need for connection upgradeswhen several vehicles are charging simultaneously.

Once the chargers are installed, commissioning requires little configuration, allowing sites to become operational quickly.

For a site where vehicles need to leave each morning for scheduled routes, this operational simplicity is a major advantage. It helps ensure reliable charging without adding complexity to daily operations.

We chose Zaptec for the quality of the product, but also for its energy intelligence. On a site like this, dynamic power management is essential.

One portal to manage the entire fleet

As the number of charge points increases, managing equipment one by one quickly becomes unrealistic.

With Zaptec Portal, operators can monitor charger status, adjust power settings, deploy updates and carry out remote diagnostics from a single interface.

The 4G connectivity integrated into each Zaptec Pro charger also avoids the need to set up complex local network infrastructure. For multi-site deployment, this autonomy simplifies commissioning, reduces IT requirements and makes future extensions easier.

Remote diagnostics make it possible to identify potential incidents quickly, limit unnecessary site visits and help maintain a high level of charger availability.

Remote management is one of the key advantages of Zaptec chargers: it allows us to monitor the equipment and intervene more effectively.

Supporting large-scale fleet electrification

The Holtzheim project illustrates the conditions needed to electrify a large professional fleet: fast installation, intelligent power management and centralised equipment control.

For organisations operating across many sites, this approach helps them move forward more confidently in their transition to electric, supported by infrastructure that is reliable, scalable and simple to administer.

Together with EDF Business Services, Zaptec is helping deploy the charging infrastructure that will support the next generation of electric fleets in France.
