Chargepoint grants for flat owners and renters

If you rent your home or own a flat and there is somewhere off-street to park, you can claim £500 towards a chargepoint.

At a glance

What: £500 per socket, capped at 75% of cost.

Who: Tenants in any UK residential property or flat owners. England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland. Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are excluded.

Where: Designated, private, off-street parking that you have a legal right to use.

When: Apply before installation. Grant ends 31 March 2027.

Who can apply

You can apply if you live in the property and either own a flat or rent any residential property. You need:

  • Designated off-street parking. This means a numbered bay, an allocated space, a private driveway. Not a shared resident car park where spaces are first-come-first-served.
  • A legal right to that parking space (lease entitlement for flat owners; rental agreement or written assignment for renters).
  • Written permission from your landlord, freeholder or managing agent before you apply. Photos and copies of permissions are part of the claim evidence.
  • An eligible electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle on the OZEV approved list. Either owned, leased, named-primary-user, or assigned to you as a company car.

You can’t apply if:

  • You’re a lodger living in the landlord’s own home (different scheme).
  • You’ve already claimed under this grant or its predecessors (the old EVHS or Domestic Recharge Scheme).
  • A chargepoint is already required by law (for example, a new-build under England’s Approved Document S since 15 June 2022, or a planning condition on the property).

How to apply, step by step

  1. Get written permission from your landlord, freeholder or managing agent.
  2. Get a quote from an OZEV-authorised installer. Check both that the installer is authorised and that the chargepoint model is on the OZEV approved list.
  3. Register a Find a Grant account and submit the application directly. You need to upload a utility bill, written permission, and the installer quote.
  4. Wait for your grant to be approved. OZEV targets 10 working days for an initial decision. You and your installer get notified by email. Do not let your installer fit the charger before you have that notification. Pre-installation is the single most common reason claims are rejected.
  5. Installer carries out the work and takes the four required photos: charger close-up; model and serial number; charger plus parking space; wide field of the building.
  6. Installer claims via the digital form. The grant is paid to the installer, who deducts it from your invoice. You never pay the £500 up-front.

If you live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland

The OZEV grant is UK-wide, but there are a few extras worth knowing:

  • Scotland: Renters and flat owners in rural and island areas can also apply for the £400 Domestic Charge Point Grant from Energy Saving Trust. The two grants can be combined.
  • Wales: No additional Welsh Government chargepoint grant for individuals at the moment. The OZEV grant is the route.
  • Northern Ireland: OZEV grants apply. NI is the only part of the UK where the Department for Infrastructure licenses cross-pavement installations across the whole region rather than each council having to approve them separately - useful if your "designated parking" turns out to be on-street and you need that grant instead.

Frequently asked questions

No. Written third-party permission is mandatory. Consider whether the landlord might apply for the residential landlord grant themselves — they can claim £500 per socket up to 200 sockets a year and you don’t need to chase them for permission paperwork.

No. This grant requires designated off-street parking. You want the on-street parking grant instead - same £500, different scheme, requires a permanent cross-pavement solution like a cable channel or pop-up bollard.

You can’t apply. The grant doesn’t fund chargepoints that are required by law or by a planning condition. Check whether the condition is on the development as a whole (might not affect you) or on your specific unit.

If your charger isn’t fitted yet, re-apply on Find a Grant. Your original application is cancelled and the new one assessed at £500. If your charger is already installed, you missed the rate uplift, as the rate is set by the application’s assessment, not the install date.

One grant per eligible vehicle. Two EVs, two applications, but only on parking spaces and chargers that meet the criteria for each.
