Zaptec Introduces Three-Phase Charging on IT Grids

Zaptec is proud to be the first to offer three-phase charging on the IT grid, making it available across all Zaptec Pro systems used in larger charging stations. In Norway, there are two types of power grids:

  • IT grid (230 volts)
  • TN grid (400 volts)

The IT grid is unique to Norway and a few other regions, which is why many vehicle manufacturers haven’t prioritized compatibility.

Firmware and Software Update for Three-Phase Charging

Today, Zaptec announces a firmware and software update enabling three-phase charging on the 230-volt IT grid. This ensures accurate power metering across all phases and is available only for EVs that support this functionality.

Supported EV models include:

  • Tesla Model X
  • Tesla Model S
  • Tesla Model 3
  • Audi e-tron
  • Newer Volkswagen e-Golf models

For Audi e-tron, this update provides the fastest charging speeds. However, for vehicles that don’t support three-phase charging, enabling the feature may reduce charging speed. If your vehicle isn’t compatible, it’s recommended not to activate this function yet.

Faster Charging for Major Customers

Zaptec is committed to offering faster, smarter, and safer charging solutions.

“When you buy Zaptec, we want it to represent our vision of providing the smartest, fastest, and safest charging on the market,” says Knut Braut, Zaptec’s Chief Technology Officer.

This update allows many of Zaptec’s major customers to enjoy significantly faster charging for their compatible electric vehicles.

Activating Three-Phase Charging

If you’d like to activate three-phase charging, contact your charging station’s administrator.

Instructions for Administrators:

  1. Log into the Zaptec Portal.
  2. Select the charging station where you want to enable three-phase charging.
  3. Under the charging station’s settings:
    • Verify that the firmware version is 2.8.0.1 or newer. If not, update the firmware.
    • Change the setting for ‘max phases’ from 1 to 3.
  4. Click Save.

The next time a compatible vehicle connects to the charging station, it will utilize three-phase charging.

Meeting User Expectations

Zaptec understands that some users have been eagerly awaiting this feature. With this update, Zaptec continues to lead the way in innovative and customer-centric charging solutions.
