Zaptec Pro and Zaptec Go 2 are ready for EU AFIR

Zaptec Pro is compliant with the EU AFIR requirements that apply in 2026 to publicly accessible recharging points. Both Zaptec Pro and Zaptec Go 2 are built to meet the EU requirements that take effect on 1 January 2027. What AFIR is

The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) came into force on 13 April 2024. It is an EU regulation that sets common rules for publicly accessible charging across the EU, and it applies only in the EU. It covers how recharging points and vehicles communicate, how drivers can pay, and how clearly prices are shown. In practice, it applies to charging that is open to the public, like car parks, retail sites, workplaces with public access and similar shared locations.

AFIR did not initially change anything for AC recharging hardware or for private home charging in the EU. All obligations were with the charge point operator. However, one of the clear objectives of the AFIR regulations is to ensure seamless interoperability. Our role is to make sure the hardware, firmware and backend behind Zaptec recharging points supports this objective.

What changed in 2026

From 8 January 2026, newly installed or renovated publicly accessible AC recharging points in the EU must have a Type 2 plug or socket that complies with EN IEC 62196-2:2017 and meet the requirement parts of EN ISO 15118-1 to -5 for vehicle communication. The latter is the digital communication standard between recharging point and vehicle that underpins smart charging and Plug & Charge.

Where Zaptec Pro stands today

Zaptec Pro meets the EU requirements that apply in 2026 to publicly accessible AC recharging points. It supports EN ISO 15118-2 communication, it is digitally connected, and it delivers the operational and session data operators need to meet their reporting and price transparency obligations.

This applies to Zaptec Pro as it ships today. No action is needed from EU customers to be covered by the 2026 requirements, other than ensuring that the firmware is up to date.

What changes in the EU on 1 January 2027

The 2027 requirements are broader, and they apply to all newly installed or renovated AC recharging points in the EU, whether publicly accessible or private:

  • Compliant with EN IEC 61851:2019
  • Compliant with EN ISO 15118-20:2022
  • On publicly accessible recharging points, any automatic authentication and authorisation services (such as Plug & Charge) must be compliant with EN ISO 15118-2:2016 or EN ISO 15118-20:2022

Where Zaptec Pro and Zaptec Go 2 stand from 2027

Both Zaptec Pro and Zaptec Go 2 will meet the EU requirements that come into effect from 1 January 2027. The position is the same for both products: the hardware is already capable, and compliance will be delivered through a firmware update. Neither product needs to be replaced.

What this means for existing installations in the EU

EU customers do not need to replace their Zaptec Pro and Zaptec Go 2 recharging points to meet EU AFIR requirements. The hardware is already capable of meeting the 2027 requirements, and compliance will be delivered to installed recharging points through a firmware update.

What happens next

We will keep updating this article as firmware, backend and partner solutions are released, and as national implementations of AFIR are confirmed in individual EU markets. If you have questions about a specific site or installation, contact your local Zaptec sales contact.

FAQ

Is Zaptec Pro AFIR compliant?

Yes. Zaptec Pro meets the EU AFIR requirements for publicly accessible recharging points that came into effect in 2026. For the EU requirements that take effect on 1 January 2027, the hardware is already capable, and compliance will be delivered through a firmware update.

Is Zaptec Go 2 AFIR compliant?

Zaptec Go 2 is built to meet the EU requirements that take effect on 1 January 2027. As with Zaptec Pro, the hardware is already capable, and compliance will be delivered through a firmware update.

Does EU AFIR apply to my installation?

AFIR currently applies to publicly accessible recharging points in the EU and will apply to all newly installed or renovated recharging points in the EU from 2027. If your existing recharging point is private - a home, or a site that is not open to the public – or is not in the EU, the regulation does not apply to it.

What has to be in place from 1 January 2027?

Newly installed or renovated recharging points in the EU must comply with at least EN IEC 61851:2019 and EN ISO 15118-20:2022, in addition to any requirements that were already in applicable.

Do existing Zaptec Pro or Zaptec Go 2 recharging points need to be replaced?

No. The hardware already supports what the 2027 EU requirements need. Compliance is delivered through a firmware update, not new hardware.

Is Zaptec Go AFIR compliant after 1 January 2027?

No. Zaptec Go is not AFIR compliant for new installations from 1 January 2027. This does not mean that existing installed Zaptec Go recharging points have to be removed or replaced. Customers can continue using recharging points that are already installed.

What happens if an existing Zaptec Go needs to be replaced through RMA?

If an existing Zaptec Go is faulty and qualifies for replacement through the normal RMA process, it will be replaced with an AFIR-ready Zaptec Go 2 from 1 January 2027.

Will there be a cost for the updates?

No, the updates won’t cost anything.

Will the firmware be available on 1 January 2027?

That is our expectation. What matters on day one is that the recharging point can meet the EU requirements - and Zaptec Pro and Zaptec Go 2 can. We will confirm firmware release timing as it is finalised.

What do I need to do as an operator today?

Nothing specific to be covered by the 2026 EU requirements with Zaptec Pro. Ahead of 2027, make sure your devices are connected and running current firmware, and check how ad hoc payment and price display are handled for your sites. We will publish practical guidance in good time.

How does AFIR apply in my market?

AFIR applies across the EU only, and EEA markets implement it nationally. Some markets have additional national rules. Your local Zaptec contact can advise on what applies where you operate.
