New EU cybersecurity rules are here – here’s how Zaptec is ready

Cyber threats are getting smarter. So are EV chargers.

Starting August 1st, 2025, new EU rules will require all connected radio equipment, including EV chargers, to meet cybersecurity standards. It’s part of an update to the Radio Equipment Directive, known as RED (EU) 2022/30.

At Zaptec, we’ve been charging ahead of this for a while.

What’s RED (EU) 2022/30, and why does it matter?

This EU directive ensures that any product using radio technologies (like WiFi or Bluetooth) is secure by design. It’s not just about fending off cyberattacks. It’s about protecting people, data and the grid.

To meet these new requirements, manufacturers must:

  • Protect network integrity
  • Safeguard user privacy
  • Ensure secure software updates
  • Prevent unauthorised access

There’s a lot of responsibility for an EV charger. Fortunately, we’ve got it covered.

EN 18031: The standard Zaptec follows

To comply, we build our products according to EN 18031, a European standard for cybersecurity in connected devices. That means:

  • Encrypted, authenticated communication
  • Firmware that’s secure and signed
  • Resilience against evolving threats
  • Certified compliance (verified by a notified body, in our case: NEMKO)

This applies whether our products are installed in a single-family home or across a massive commercial fleet.

Firmware: The hidden hero of compliance

A compliant product isn’t just one that’s well built—it needs to stay compliant. Firmware updates are how we make that happen.

Here’s how it works:

  • Chargers placed on the market after August 1, 2025 should run the latest firmware to ensure RED compliance.
  • Installers ensure everything is up to date during setup.
  • Users? Just plug in and charge—nothing extra required.
  • Older chargers? They’re not affected by the directive, but we still keep them secure with updates when possible.

    What about your connection?

Whether your charger connects via Wi-Fi, 4G or Power Line Communication (PLC), our security model stays the same. That means end-to-end encryption, role-based access and secure device authentication.

    In short:

    • RED (EU) 2022/30 makes cybersecurity mandatory for new chargers from August 1, 2025
    • Zaptec complies via EN 18031 and verified testing
    • Firmware updates ensure compliance over time
    • Installers handle updates, users stay protected without lifting a finger
